Psalm 27:4 “One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple."
One of my favorite things about reading the Psalms is the rich
language and vivid descriptions of God’s power, faithfulness, strength and
character. David wrote in such a way that richly portrayed God’s greatness and
the way he felt in the company of the King.
David wrote countless poems and songs unto the Lord
reflecting life changing encounters that He had in God’s presence. If I had to
describe the way I feel in God’s presence through the composition of a Psalm,
it might look something like this:
Encounter
His power overwhelms me.
It overwhelms.
The essence of His presence is
emanating,
I can almost taste it on my tongue.
His eyes see through me, but I
don’t mind;
I think I want them to.
I feel a warmth as I bow my head
down at His feet,
I think it’s coming from His heart.
But His heart is also singing,
echoing something greater that I
don’t understand.
I love the sound of His voice.
It comforts me. I am at ease
as the richness
washes over me.
He doesn’t leave me on the ground.
He pulls my head up so I can see
His
eyes and they are deep pools
that don’t end.
The air around me is sweet and
spiced
from the aroma of who He is.
When my fingers brushed His hands
the color returned to my cold skin,
my aching bones creaked
and the blood moved again.
Every other one
said they couldn’t make
the blood move, but
He did.
How do you thank
someone who does
the impossible?
How do you, because
He doesn’t even ask for it.
I think He knows my knees
hurt from the hard ground.
He lifts me up.
He lifts me up to sit next to Him,
in a chair so tall.
It’s decorated lavishly with
opulent colors and crystals
and stones I have never
looked upon.
There is a robe waiting
for me.
He knew I was coming?
Does He have the right person?
I begin to move and see
my name is engraved
into the chair.
I look over at Him and
He is already looking at me.
He tells me it’s not a dream.
So, I believe Him.
