Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
- St. Patrick
I thought of this quote the other day as I was listening this beautiful song called “May God Be Everywhere I Go.”
I have enough years behind me and theological understanding to know that I can’t make God be with me more than he already is. He is always with us. His Spirit is alive in us.
And yet, our humanness causes us to forget. We feel alone. We feel neglected and anxious. We are often fearful, insecure, an even depressed.
Why is this?
I don’t know if I have the answers to why God made it this way. Why the kingdom of God is amidst us, yet still coming. I do know that his power, authority and peace is available to us in every moment if we choose to receive it—or even more so, if we just choose to remember, and repeat the promises that have been spoken over us.
He is before us, behind us, beneath us, above us…
This is one of those things that we could and maybe should recite a hundred times a day. Turning our thoughts to his eternal hope will fill us with his “peace that passes understanding.”
Be encouraged. God is with you, and for you; and because of what Jesus did for you on the cross, the war is already won.
We are not alone. Join me in praying for a new awareness and pursuit of his presence in our lives.
